The core of coaching focuses on creating a collaborative relationship between the coach and client, rather than an authoritarian relationship, creating awareness, collaborative goal-setting, versus analyzing problems, and facilitating learning and support as the client reaches their goals. The coaching relationship emphasizes trust, intimacy, and understanding. The coach offers active listening, support, and asks powerful questions to maintain the client’s success and ongoing learning throughout their program.

Therapy helps provide insight on their past and trauma to promote healing, while coaches focus on awareness and insight to encourage action. In therapy, the primary focus is on interpersonal health or an identifiable issue (depression/anxiety, etc.) that prevents the patient from performing daily activities optimally. In these sessions, the therapist/counselor will focus on the patient’s past, uncovering unconscious issues, and assisting in repairing any damage from the past. This may also include prescribing medications or other treatments to relieve any symptoms the patient experiences. The therapist also focuses on any past relationships, problems, or behavioral patterns. The coach does not ask questions about the client’s past, does not prescribe medications, diagnose the client, or attempt to uncover underlying reasons for their behaviors. A coach focuses on goals, untapped potential, and critical factors to enhance or maximize the client’s potential in life.
